Jesus taught by telling stories. We call them parables—earthly stories with a heavenly meaning. Jesus told many stories that pointed people to the deeper realities of God’s Kingdom. The Good Samaritan, the lost sheep, the lost son, the lost coin, and on and on. These are simple stories, and people like simple stories. But they are also deep stories. The story of the sower pries deep into the heart of the matter. And the matter is, what do we do with the word? Both the Word breathed by the Spirit and the Word made flesh. The stories that Jesus tells brings our thoughts to the heart of the matter. And this is where we will go for the next few weeks, the heart of the matter.

september series: following jesus
In our abiding with Jesus, we
find (1) solitary
space. We make time to be alone with God. We find a place with
no, or minimal distraction. In this, we follow the example of Jesus (Matthew
14:23), “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself
to pray.”
In our assembling, we find (2) small group space. Within our gathering, we have
many small groups that meet for study and service. Jesus called a small group,
twelve boys to be with him, and together, they were a mini community growing in
the grace and knowledge of their Lord and Savior. (3) We find safe space. This is a very
small inner circle characterized by vulnerability, grace, depth and
restoration. Here we find the kind of experience Peter had with Jesus when his
denial was opened before him, and he was graciously restored in love and
service to his Lord. (4) Sanctuary
space is the gathering of the whole body, head to toe,
every part coming together to be built up in Christ, “for the praise of His
glory” (Eph 1:12). Hebrews 10:25 reminds us, “Let us not give up meeting
together as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another,
and all the more as we see the Day approaching.”
And finally, in our apprenticing, we find ourselves doing what
Jesus did. There we are, walking in the way of our teacher, following Him into
(5) social
space. This is the outreach of His mini community equipped and
sent out as His missional community, as ambassadors of His Kingdom. In this, we
serve by the work of our hands and speak of the Source of our hope.
